A practical guide with examples

Cover Letter Examples and How to Write One

A Cover Letter is a short letter sent with your resume that explains why you are applying for this particular job and what you would bring to the employer. Keep it to one page or less: a greeting, a paragraph that links your experience to the job ad with honest examples, and a closing that asks for an interview. In Astr, the Cover Letter tool drafts one in English or Arabic from your CV and the job ad, and you review and edit it before sending.

The Cover Letter button appears at the top of the editor once your resume has content. Writing one needs no subscription; usage limits apply to prevent abuse.

How do you write a Cover Letter in Astr?

  1. Prepare your resume in the editor

Start a new resume or upload your current one for the editor to read. The draft is written from your resume, so the clearer your experience and skills, the more accurate the letter.

  2. Click Cover Letter and paste the job ad

Paste the job advertisement, or type the job title and employer if you have no ad, then choose the letter’s language: English or Arabic.

  3. Review the draft, then send it

Correct anything that does not apply to you and add what you know about the employer, then copy the text into your email or download it as a text file. Never send a draft without reading all of it.

How to write a Cover Letter, step by step

A good letter is short and specific: roughly 200 to 350 words, written for this job rather than every job. Order it like this:

  1. Subject line and greeting

Put the job title in the subject line. Address the hiring manager by name if you know it; otherwise address the HR or recruitment team.

  2. Opening

Two sentences: the role you are applying for and where you saw it, and who you are in brief (your field or current title).

  3. Evidence from your experience

One or two paragraphs that take two or three requirements from the ad and name, for each, a task you have actually done. Numbers help only when they are true and you can explain them in an interview.

  4. Why this employer?

One or two sentences about something real you know about the employer or team and how it connects to the work you want to do. Avoid generic praise that fits any company.

  5. Closing

Mention the attached resume, ask politely for an interview and thank the reader for their time.

  6. Signature and contact details

Your full name, phone number and email address, all matching your resume.

Common mistakes that weaken a letter

  • One letter sent to every job without naming the employer or its requirements.
  • Repeating the resume line by line instead of choosing the two or three strongest pieces of evidence.
  • Generic qualities with no examples, such as “ambitious, hard-working team player”.
  • Numbers or achievements you cannot prove or explain in an interview.
  • The wrong employer name or job title left over from a previous letter.
  • Running past one page, or writing in a language the employer did not ask for.

Cover Letter FAQs

What is a Cover Letter, and how is it different from a resume?

A Cover Letter is a short letter that accompanies your resume and explains why you are applying for this job and why you are a good fit. Your resume lists your career history; the letter connects it to one specific job ad.

Should I write my Cover Letter in English or Arabic?

Use the language of the job ad or the language the employer asks for. If the ad is in English, an English letter is usually expected; if it is unclear, match the language of the resume you are sending. In Astr you choose the letter’s language when you write it, whatever language the website is in.

How long should a Cover Letter be?

One page or less: roughly 200 to 350 words in three or four paragraphs. If the employer asks for a short message in the email body or an application form, keep the opening, your strongest piece of evidence and the closing line.

Should I send my Cover Letter as a PDF, a Word file or in the email body?

Follow the employer’s instructions first. For attachments, send a PDF to keep the formatting unless Word is requested; for an emailed application with no instructions, the letter can go in the email body with your resume attached. In Astr you copy the text or download it as a text file and place it where you need it.

Do I need a Cover Letter for every job?

Not always; some job platforms do not let you attach one. It helps when the employer asks for it, or when you need to explain something your resume cannot say on its own, such as a change of field or a move to another city. If you write one, write it for that job.

Can I use a Cover Letter example as it is?

No. Use the examples to see the order and tone, then write your own experience. Recruiters recognise copied letters, and anything that does not apply to you may come up in the interview.

Is writing a Cover Letter in Astr free?

Yes. The Cover Letter tool in the editor needs no subscription, with usage limits to prevent abuse. You only need a resume with content in the editor, because the letter is built from it and from the job ad you paste.
