Introduction: Preparing for Hiring in 2026

ATS software and AI do not mean every employer reads or assesses resumes in the same way. A useful approach is to understand the application steps, then prepare clear, truthful evidence that fits the role.

Editorial note — September 17, 2026: This is a practical guide, not a survey conducted by Astr or a statistical study of the job market. Unsupported percentages have been removed from the earlier version. The technical references below explain system capabilities, not adoption rates in Saudi Arabia or a universal rejection rate.

Ready to apply the advice? Create your resume, then use the checks below.

Chapter 1: How ATS Systems Work

Oracle describes an applicant tracking system as software that helps employers manage candidates across hiring stages, with capabilities that vary between systems. It is not one standardized test with a shared passing score.

Separate Parsing, Matching and Hiring Decisions

StageQuestion to checkWhat you can do
Data extractionAre contact details, experience and education understandable?Review any automatically populated application fields
Matching requirementsDo your skills and experience relate to the role?Highlight genuine evidence relevant to the listing
Candidate assessmentDo you meet the employer's requirements and show your contribution?Answer application questions accurately and prepare for interviews

A missing parsed field is not enough to establish that an application was rejected. Successfully reading a file does not establish that the candidate meets the job requirements.

Check the Actual File

Greenhouse documents resume-parsing difficulties, including images, complex formatting and unclear sections. Inspect the exported file rather than judging reliability from its appearance alone.
  • Open the final document and check that all content appears.
  • Copy its text into a plain editor and review names, dates and experience order. This is an initial check, not a simulation of every ATS.
  • Keep contact details and section headings readable as text.
  • Follow the format and size accepted by the employer's application portal.
  • Correct extracted application fields if the portal lets you do so.

Chapter 2: AI in Hiring

AI may support search, organization or matching. Its presence does not establish that an employer detects AI-written text, scores body language or rewards a particular career trajectory. Avoid assuming a process the employer has not described.

Use AI to Improve Clarity

Provide the facts first, then ask for clearer wording, less repetition or better organization. Review the result: did a title change? Did the assistant add a credential or a number? Does the wording overstate your contribution?

A useful request is: “Here are my actual responsibilities and results. Phrase them clearly for this role and identify any missing information you need from me.” Do not use improvements to invent experience or disguise a missing essential qualification.

Prepare for Interviews

Build examples around the situation, your task, what you did and the result. Explain your own contribution instead of claiming a team's entire result as individual work. For recorded or remote interviews, read the instructions and check audio and connectivity beforehand.

Chapter 3: What to Make Clear to Employers

This is an editorial checklist, not a ranking derived from a hiring-manager survey:

ElementQuestion to answerAvoid
Relevant experienceWhich work relates directly to this role?Listing every historical task without selection
ResultsWhat outcome can you explain and substantiate?Presenting estimates as measured facts
SkillsWhere have you used the requested skill?Adding tools you cannot use
QualificationsDoes the listing request a specific degree or license?Presenting incomplete study as a completed qualification
Professional summaryWhat is your field and most relevant experience?A generic description that could fit anyone
ReadabilityCan the reader find the key information easily?Crowding that makes content difficult to read

Illustrative Examples: Turn Tasks into Evidence

These examples are fictional teaching examples, not achievements to copy into your resume:

General taskMore specific wording, if true
Prepared reportsPrepared the weekly sales report and consolidated branch data into a shared format
Trained employeesTrained 6 new employees in customer-service procedures over two months
Followed up ordersTracked delayed orders and coordinated with the warehouse to resolve open cases

A useful statement does not need a percentage. Without a reliable measurement, describe the scope and method of the work instead of inventing a result.

Chapter 4: Applying for Jobs in Saudi Arabia

Start with the official listing, not a generic checklist that assumes every role has the same requirements. Record:

  • The discipline, experience and type of work requested.
  • Location and any stated on-site or remote arrangements.
  • Languages and tools relevant to the role.
  • Professional registration or licensing, where the employer requires it.
  • Documents, deadlines and application instructions.

A regulator's name is not itself a professional certificate. Name the qualification or license you actually hold, its issuer and status. Do not claim accreditation you lack. Graduates can highlight relevant projects and internships rather than inventing employment.

Chapter 5: A Practical Resume Review

1. Tailor Content to the Role

Identify the essential requirements in the job description and connect each one to evidence from your experience. Use clear professional terminology when it accurately describes your work; do not repeat keywords simply to raise a score.

2. Choose a Useful Length

Do not shrink important experience into unreadable text just to stay on one page. A short resume may fit one page; multiple relevant roles may justify two. Academic CVs and other contexts can differ. Follow the employer's instructions.

3. Review the Final Version

Check contact details, titles, dates and links. Keep a copy for each application so you know what you submitted. If you translate the resume, review meaning and professional titles after translation.

4. Treat Scores as Guidance

You can check your resume for improvement suggestions. Astr's score is its own indicator, not the employer's result or an interview guarantee. Accurate information and role relevance matter more than reaching a perfect number.

Chapter 6: Following Changes in Hiring

Instead of predicting a rejection percentage or asserting that technology will replace recruiters, watch the requirements of the roles you target. Keep notes on recurring requirements and develop skills or work samples around real gaps.

If you receive no response, review role fit, application instructions and the quality of your evidence. Do not assume ATS software alone caused the outcome without information from the employer.
